Screw the Gipper- Win one for Barrel Man!

Denver won for just the second time in 18 games at the dreaded Arrowhead Stadium (one of the toughest places to win-especially in DEC) in December as they embarrass Kansas City at home winning 44-13. The Broncos are bouncing back from that ugly four game skid with two straight complete wins. The Broncos completely outplayed the “CHEFS” but still made a few mistakes. Late in the fourth I was accused of being greedy hoping for 50 points. Sorry but I don’t just want to beat division rivals, I want to humiliate them, at home, in front of their fans! So we didn’t hit the fifty mark but what a game. First of all watching Kyle Orton completely outplay Matt Cassel who McDaniels originally hopped to work into this offense if possible in the early off-season with the Cutler debacle. Kyle wasn’t perfect throwing an interception off the opening drive and fumbling on two seperate occasions, but played through it and didn’t get rattled. Orton threw for 180 yards and pair of TD’s, working the ball all over the field. Meanwhile, Cassel only threw for 84 yards and a pair of interceptions which only earned him the bench and a view of Brodie Croyle. The true difference was the run game. Buckhalter stepped up as the beast in the hole for our run game with Moreno on supporting duty, despite Moreno getting the TD at the end of an all Buckhalter drive. The Broncos ran for a season-high 245 yards behind Correll Buckhalter (113 yards) and Knowshon Moreno (86 yards, 2 TDs). Meanwhile the Chiefs were left wondering if Hall of Fame running back Derrick Thomas (whose number and jersey was retired before the game) might come down from the box and take over. Matt Prater put in 3 Field Goals to keep the points coming.
Well the other side of the ball provided equal thrills with sacks, fumbles and interceptions, OH MY! The secondary was everywhere allowing for multiple turnovers, two by Andre’ Goodman one fumble returned for a touchdown and an INT. Oh yeah and Elvis got it done again. A complete win with contributions on both sides of the ball. Keep it up boys we will need an effort like this against the unbeaten Colts next week.

Unfortunately our recap show will be delayed. Rhys is busy soaking up some sun so we’ll have to catch him up when he returns. Let’s see some comments. WHO GETS YOUR GAMEBALL? Buckhalter, Hill, Moreno, Orton, Marshall, Prater, Goodman, McDaniels, who? Post comments on the blog or e-mail hosts@broncoscast.com. I liked at the end of the game putting Peyton Hillis in. He is such a great/versatile player. I have no idea why he isn’t worked into this offense on a regular basis. He is a fan favorite and even thousands of miles from Denver in Seattle Broncos fans vocalized their praises when he checked into the game (unlike Simms’s reception). Honorary game-ball to Barrel man, but Buckhalter opened the field up for the rest of this offense.

Game ball has to go to the running backs, but I’m loving the WR screens we’ve been using with Marshall. I remember we ran a couple early in the game and I texted by my brother “Marshall will bust one of those for 50+ yards by the end of the game”. Unfortunately he only made it 49 yards, but the point stands. They have a huge upside with his quickness and ability to break tackles. Our offense is showing it has a lot more weapons than it did at the start of the season.

Drew I think Peyton Hillis earned himself some playing time with the way the guy ran on Sunday. I think at the least he will replace Lamont Jordan but at the end of the day the Broncos are a victim of being rich with talent in the backfield. Buckhalter was incredible in KC and Knowshon Moreno is coming along as he had an amazing game against the Giants and he showed off his nose for the endzone against Kansas City. Peyton is a fan favorite but at this point I think he is third on the depth chart at tail back and unfortunately early in the season his blocking was not great when he played fullback.

By the way Drew I am very disappointed in you as the creator and lead writer on broncoscast.com…. The score was actually 44-13 not 44-14. Are you intentionally trying to give the Chiefs and extra point because you feel bad for them or do you believe they earned that extra point because of the wide receiver Wade’s play?? Just kidding Drew but the score was 44-13.

Ahhh snap. It was homefield advantage Dave, I play too much fantasy I guess. Good catch, you are unofficially my editor, i like the bit about head writer because we are supposed to both blog only I am the only one who does. So instead of getting on my case you should let my partner know you’d like to see shared time. Like when only Moreno or Buckhalter goes off, it’s just better for everyone as a one-two. Good call on Hillis Dave I think he earned a 1st or second quarter appearance in Indie. I think he should be out in front on those Screens WOODY. Worked for Arkansas. Maybe Marshall can win the Heismen.

To be fair though, I make an outrageously optimistic prediction every time I watch the Broncos play. I’m bound to get one right occasionally.
As for Hillis…
I’m a fan too, but before we all jump on his bandwagon too much, remember that by the time he came in we had the game in the bag. He was running against an exhausted and defeated defense who had already been beat up by Moreno and Buckhalter. He’s obviously good enough to be a top 2 back on most teams in the league, but it’s hard to give a lot of carries to 3 different backs. Buckhalter and Moreno are running great right now and if it’s not broken, don’t fix it.

Oh no woody you inspired my next blog, you went and called my favorite player a bandwagon, yeah that just happened.
